I was walking with my girlfriend near Cannery Row while on our summer vacation together when I spotted the sign for El Cantaro. I asked her**, "Sweetie, what are those three little words you've always longed to hear?" Immediately she replied, "Mexican Vegan Restaurant!" So then I pointed out the sign to her, and her eyes lit up with joy. We knew we had to stop for lunch. It took us a few minutes to choose from the many enticing options on the menu. I settled on the "chicken" enmoladas, and she picked the tlayudas oaxaqueñas. Both dishes were delicious. El Cantaro deserves extra credit for understanding that vegan does not equal bland. Our dishes were wonderfully seasoned with just the right amount of heat. I'd also recommend one of their rotating, seasonal, home-made aguas frescas. We found the decor and ambience not only charming but, dare I say, romantic. We sat at a table next to an open window and savored our dishes with the ocean breeze blowing in our hair. Not a bad remodeling job considering this used to be a Subway. Monterey County's wineries and scenery will undoubtedly bring us back from LA for another visit. Please make sure Cantaro is still in business so we can eat there again! |

Amazing Vegan food! I am not vegan, but 2 dear friends are. We went there recently as we usually go to Petra, and wanted to try something new. It was fabulous! My only warning is if you are not used to eating vegan it can be hard to digest.....drink plenty of water! |

We have been here four times since they have opened!! We loved dining at El cantaro. The restaurant is family owned and they are very genuine sweet people! We have tried the fajitas, tamales, el cantaro burrito, bean and cheese, dos amigos burrito, veggie enchiladas, potato tacos and all of it we just loved! Their chile de Arbol salsa is so yummy! This is now our favorite restaurant in Monterey!! |

El Cantaro is my favorite Mexican vegan restaurant in Monterey! We had the "chicken" and "beef" quesadillas, huaraches, tamale, potato tacos, "chicken" taquitos, bean and rice burrito and a jalapeno cheese tamale. All of it was delicious, spicy and flavorful! The staff couldn't be more nice if they tried. If you are in Monterey, give El Cantaro a try, you'll leave feeling satisfied!! I can't wait to go back! |

First of all I am giving the 5 stars just because this a Mexican Vegan Restaurant! We don't have many vegan restaurants on the Monterey Peninsula. We arrived early and were greeted by a friendly server. The kids were hesitant but have grown used to vegan/vegetarian places. They just wanted chips and if the chips were good then they would try a quesadilla! Well, the chips were great and so was the veggie taco, veggie burrito, and of course the quesadilla! Oh and the soy mint chip ice cream was rich and creamy! Service was a little slow but we weren't in a hurry! Enjoyed a leisurely dinner at a new place. Pricing was a little high..I thought... but worth it. We will try it again and so will the kids. |

We LOVE this place! After being sorely disappointed with both the vegan and Mexican options in Monterey, we were thrilled to find this authentic, cheap, and healthy restaurant. My boyfriend loves vegan food, but i have always been disappointed or uninterested in meat alternatives. I have been proven wrong! Always ask what fresh 'water' they have for the day--they make delicious options. I've had the lemonade (authentic Mexican style lemon/lime ade), watermelon, hibiscus, tamarindo, iced tea, and horchata. None of them are what you expect unless you are familiar with authentic aguas frescas...and all are refreshing deliciousness. Love the chick'n burrito, memitas, and anything that copies on their freshly made-to-order tortillas. We go here once a week or more... It's that good. |

What a surprise! I never thought VEGAN MEXICAN would taste this good. I was worried since it was empty when we came in but I ordered the vegetable enchilada with tomatillo sauce.... it was amazing! Watermelon aqua fresca was great and wasn't sweetened so it tasted like biting into the real thing. After eating you feel super light yet full, not sleepy and sluggish when you eat the heavy stuff! I love this place. |
